2,4-DNP Test 2,4-DNP is added to the following:
  • acetophenone
  • formaldehyde
  • benzaldehyde
  • mesityl oxide
  • proprioaldehyde
  • cyclohexanone
acetophenone: orange

formaldehyde: yellow

benzaldehyde: orange

mesityl oxide: red

proprioaldehyde: yellow

cyclohexanone: yellow

Jones Reagent Test Acetone and Jones reagent are added to the following:
  • ethanol
  • cyclohexane
  • t-butyl alcohol
ethanol: blue-green precipitate

cyclohexanol: blue-green precipitate

t-butyl alcohol: orange solution (no reaction)

Lucas Test Lucas reagent is added to the following:
  • ethanol
  • cyclohexane
  • t-butyl alcohol
ethanol: no reaction

cyclohexanol: turns cloudy after three minutes

t-butyl alcohol: turns cloudy with two distinct layers

Silver Nitrate Test:  -n-butyl chloride: no reaction

                                   -t-butyl chloride: reacts rapidly to form a precipitate of AgCl
