William Whewell

The Discovery of the Electron

Whewell coined a number of other terms, including cation, anion, cathode, and anode. By convention, the metal plate connected to the negative terminal of the series of batteries used to study the effect of an electric current on a gas is called the cathode. The other plate is the anode.
